My parents were beatniks, born in the 1920s and living in the jazz subculture in the late 1940s and the 1950s. They had young friends who were hippies. My mother did not enjoy smoking pot but was comfortable around it and just said “no.” My dad did all the drugs that all my contemporaries did. He matched us drug-for-drug. He lived in communes and repaired electric guitars for a living when jazz gigs were few. He definitely fit in just fine among hippies who were 20 or so years younger than he was.
