What some families do though is that they modify the bastard surname to show that they’re legitimate even if their ancestor wasn’t. An example of this in the story is the Longwaters family. They’re descended from a bastard son of Elaena Targaryen and Alyn Velaryon, Jon Waters, and added “Long-” to the name later to emphasize their legitimacy even if they have bastard roots.
